Why math explanations usually fail
Most math explanations jump steps. A textbook will say 'it follows that' and skip three algebraic steps that aren't obvious to someone learning for the first time. A teacher will assume background knowledge that the student doesn't have. The 'assume I understand X but not Y' instruction in this prompt prevents both problems — it tells the AI exactly where to start and what not to assume. The worked example closes the gap between understanding the concept abstractly and knowing how to actually use it.
The follow-up that builds real understanding
After you get the explanation and example, ask: 'Give me a slightly harder problem of the same type and walk through the solution.' Then try to solve it yourself before reading the walkthrough. This is the most effective math learning loop you can run with AI — explanation, example, practice problem, solution. Repeat it for any concept you're struggling with and the understanding compounds quickly.
